Mumbai BMC Elections: Mumbai will get a new mayor by the end of January 2026. This will happen after the BJP and Eknath Shinde–led Shiv Sena won the BMC elections and became the single largest bloc. Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena faction lost control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
The process starts with the Urban Development Department. It will decide the reservation of the mayor’s post through a lottery. The reservation can be for general, women, or backward classes. This lottery is expected to be held next week.
After the reservation is decided, eligible candidates will file their nominations. The mayoral election will then be held exactly 10 days after the lottery process is completed.
How is Mayor selected after the Mumbai BMC Elections?
The mayor is elected by the corporators of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in a special house meeting. The candidate who gets more than half of the total corporators’ votes is elected mayor.
If no single party has a clear majority, alliances become important. In such a situation, splits or defections are possible during the mayoral election.
In the BMC results, the BJP won 89 seats, and its alliance partner Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) won 29 seats. The Mahayuti alliance also won civic body elections in Thane, Pune, and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the BJP’s BMC win as a record and a major development in Maharashtra politics.
