US Iran War

The US Iran war has now crossed the one-month mark, and questions about a potential US ground invasion are growing louder. Additional American troops have been deployed to the Middle East in recent days, and the Pentagon is reportedly preparing for limited ground operations inside Iran. But is the US truly ready to invade – and what do Trump’s moves so far actually tell us?

What Forces Has the US Deployed?

Long before the US Iran war began, around 40,000 to 50,000 US soldiers were already stationed across the Middle East. Since early February, the US has added more than 120 aircraft to the region – the biggest surge in American airpower since the 2003 Iraq War – including F-35 stealth fighters, F-22 jets, and aerial refuelling tankers.

More recently, the Pentagon ordered three additional formations to the Gulf. These include the USS Tripoli and USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Groups, carrying the 31st and 11th Marine Expeditionary Units respectively, and roughly 2,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division’s Immediate Response Force at Fort Bragg. In total, nearly 7,000 additional troops have been deployed since the conflict began.

Is This Enough for a Full Invasion?

In short – no. The US Iran war deployments fall far short of what a full-scale ground invasion would require. For comparison, the 2003 Iraq invasion involved 150,000 US troops and 23,000 coalition soldiers. The Pentagon is reportedly considering sending a further 10,000 ground troops, which would bring total numbers to around 17,000 – still a fraction of what an occupation of Iran would demand.

Ian Lesser of the German Marshall Fund told Al Jazeera that the forces currently in place are a “threat in being” – more useful as a bargaining chip and deterrent than as an invasion force. A full conventional invasion, he said, is “virtually out of the question” both politically and operationally.

What Operations Are Actually Being Planned?

Rather than a full invasion, the US Iran war strategy appears focused on limited, high-impact raids. Two unnamed US officials told The Washington Post that the Pentagon is preparing raids on Kharg Island – which handles 90 percent of Iran’s crude oil exports — and coastal sites near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran closed the strait after the first US-Israeli strikes, sending Brent crude prices soaring from around $65 per barrel to nearly $116.

President Trump confirmed in a Financial Times interview that seizing Kharg Island is under consideration. “Maybe we take Kharg Island. Maybe we don’t. We have a lot of options,” he said. British security adviser John Phillips told Al Jazeera that any such operation would begin with carrier-based strikes on Iranian air defences, followed by Marine amphibious and heliborne assaults to neutralise threats and destroy key infrastructure.

Another potential target is Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, which reportedly contains an underground “missile city” built to control or block the strait. Trump is also reportedly weighing a mission to extract approximately 450kg of enriched uranium from inside Iran – a highly complex operation requiring troops to go deep into Iranian territory.

Iran’s Warning and What Comes Next

Tehran has made its position clear. Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that US soldiers would face fierce resistance on Iranian soil and that regional allies assisting any such operation would have their “vital infrastructure” targeted. Gulf states, international shipping lanes, and global energy markets are all in a crossfire as the US Iran war has no indication of reaching a diplomatic solution.
