Indian football is facing a major crisis due to uncertainty over the future of the Indian Super League. There is no clear confirmation yet on whether the ISL will be held at all, creating fear and instability across the sport.

Senior Indian footballers, including Sunil Chhetri, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, and Sandesh Jhingan, have appealed directly to FIFA to intervene. In a joint video message, the players said the Indian football governing body is no longer able to fulfill its responsibilities and warned that the sport is facing permanent paralysis. They described the situation as a humanitarian, sporting, and economic crisis and said they simply want the chance to play football.

The players stressed that footballers, staff, club owners, and fans deserve clarity, protection, and a secure future. They said the appeal to FIFA is not political but a necessary last effort to save Indian football.

Meanwhile, the All India Football Federation has received letters from most ISL clubs stating they may be willing to take part in the 2025–26 season, but only if strict conditions are met. These include financial guarantees, no league administration fees, and AIFF taking responsibility for operational losses caused by a shortened season.

ISL clubs have also asked the AIFF to provide a clear roadmap for future financial and governance reforms and to seek government funding to support the league.

Earlier, City Football Group sold its stake in Mumbai City FC, ending a six-year association that had marked a major phase of growth and success for the club.
