
Michael Carrick is an English football coach and former player. As of January 2026, he is serving as the interim head coach of Manchester United. He is best known for spending 12 years as a player at Manchester United, where he also wore the captain’s armband.
Carrick has previously been United’s caretaker manager for three games in 2021, winning two and drawing one. He left when Ralf Rangnick became interim manager. He also coached Middlesbrough from 2022 to 2025, taking them from 21st to fourth in his first season before leaving after finishing 10th in 2024–25.
As a player, Carrick made 464 appearances for United over 12 years, winning five Premier League titles and one Champions League. He also played for West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur.

As a player, Michael Carrick won the FA Youth Cup with West Ham United U18 in 1998–99 and the UEFA Intertoto Cup with West Ham United in 1999.
At Manchester United, he won five Premier League titles (2006–07, 2007–08, 2008–09, 2010–11, and 2012–13); the FA Cup in 2015–16; and the League/EFL Cup in 2008–09, 2009–10, and 2016–17. He also won the FA Community Shield six times, the UEFA Champions League in 2007–08, the UEFA Europa League in 2016–17, and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2008.
Individually, he was named in the PFA Team of the Year in 2003–04 (First Division) and 2012–13 (Premier League) and was Manchester United Players’ Player of the Year in 2012–13.

Michael Carrick’s Personal Life
Michael Carrick married Lisa Roughead on 16 June 2007 in Wymondham, Leicestershire. Lisa is a Pilates instructor and has a business degree. They started dating when they were both in school. They have two children, a daughter named Louise and a son named Jacey.
In October 2018, Carrick said he had suffered from depression for two years after losing the 2009 UEFA Champions League Final.
Carrick has one younger brother named Graeme, who is four years younger. Graeme was also at West Ham United but had many injuries. He later completed an MSc in Sport Coaching. He is currently an FA Regional Coach Mentor for the NorthEast and Yorkshire. He earlier worked as an FA Skills Coach for seven years, coached at Team Northumbria, and also coached under-10 and under-16 teams at the Newcastle United Academy.
Michael Carrick Contract
Manchester United have reached an agreement in principle to make Michael Carrick the interim head coach until the end of the 2025–26 season. The deal includes the staff Carrick wants, but final contract details are still being finalized. An official announcement is expected soon.
Carrick’s first game in charge will be the Manchester derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford. His backroom team may include Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Under-21 coach Travis Binnion. Darren Fletcher, who managed two games after Ruben Amorim’s sacking, will likely return to the Under-18s.
The appointment process was led by director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada, with sign-off from co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family. United will now focus on finding a permanent manager after Amorim’s exit.
