The India squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, along with the team for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, will be announced on Saturday, December 20, 2025. The selection meeting will take place at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters in Mumbai and will be followed by a press conference.
The Ajit Agarkar-led national selection committee will meet at the Cricket Centre building near the Wankhede Stadium to finalize the squads. After the meeting, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav will address the media. This effectively confirms Suryakumar Yadav’s position as captain, despite his recent poor form with the bat.
Vice-captain Shubman Gill’s place in the squad remains uncertain. Gill has struggled in the shortest format this year, averaging 24.25 in 15 matches with a highest score of 47. His situation has become more complicated due to a toe injury sustained during practice ahead of the fourth T20I against South Africa, which was later abandoned because of heavy fog in Lucknow.
Gill’s availability for the fifth and final T20I in Ahmedabad is still unclear. It also remains to be seen whether the selectors consider him fully fit for the T20 World Cup or add a conditional note to his selection. This uncertainty has once again brought wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson into discussions, especially after he was overlooked in favor of Gill for the recent home series.
India currently leads the ongoing T20I series against South Africa 2-1 and has been dominant in the format over the last two years. The team has won 41 of the 46 T20 matches played in the past 24 months, including their T20 World Cup triumph in 2024.
The 10th edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be held from February 7 to March 8, 2026, across eight venues in India and Sri Lanka. India is placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, the USA, the Netherlands, and Namibia. The hosts will begin their campaign against the USA in Mumbai on February 7.
