At least four people were killed and 25 others injured after a massive road accident on the Delhi-Agra Expressway in Mathura on Tuesday morning. The crash involved seven buses and three cars and was triggered by dense fog that severely reduced visibility.
The poor visibility led to a chain-reaction collision, resulting in a multi-vehicle pile-up. Several vehicles caught fire after the impact, creating panic among passengers trapped at the site.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shlok Kumar confirmed the incident and said that search and rescue operations were nearing completion. Efforts are currently underway to clear the blocked stretch of the highway and safely move stranded passengers.
“Four people lost their lives, and 25 others were injured in a major road accident on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura this morning. Seven buses and three small cars were involved, and dense fog was the main reason behind the collision,” SSP Kumar told reporters.
He added that foggy conditions were still present at the location. “Low visibility caused the vehicles to ram into each other. Some of the cars also caught fire following the crash,” he said.
Explaining the response, the SSP said teams from the fire department, local police, and district administration were rushed to the spot immediately after the incident was reported. “The search and rescue operation is almost complete. So far, four deaths have been confirmed,” he said.
According to officials, around 25 injured passengers have been admitted to hospitals, though none are in critical condition. “They are receiving medical treatment, and arrangements are being made to send the remaining passengers home using government vehicles,” SSP Kumar added.
Mathura District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh also termed the incident “very unfortunate” and said the administration’s focus remains on relief work. He noted that the exact cause of the accident would be investigated later.
“We have recovered the bodies of four deceased persons. More than 12 fire tenders and over 14 ambulances were deployed immediately. The injured were taken to CHC Baldev and the District Hospital. All of them are stable and out of danger,” Singh said.
He further added that surviving passengers are being transported from the site using buses. “The government machinery responded promptly. Relief work is progressing smoothly, and we are ensuring the best possible treatment for the injured. Heavy fog and low visibility are clearly visible here. The cause will be examined later,” the DM said.
This accident comes just a day after a similar fog-related incident on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Early Monday morning, dense fog led to a massive pile-up involving around 20 vehicles.
That crash occurred at around 5 am and claimed four lives, including two police personnel, while leaving 15 to 20 people seriously injured. Poor visibility due to thick fog was cited as the primary reason behind that accident as well.
