President Donald Trump said on January 2, 2026, that if Iran “kills peaceful protesters,” the United States would “come to their rescue.” He made the statement in a post on his Truth Social account, saying the U.S. was “locked and loaded and ready to go,” without explaining how it might intervene.

The warning came after reports that at least six people were killed during nearly a week of protests in Iran. The protests began over severe economic conditions, including long-running hyperinflation worsened by Western sanctions linked to Iran’s nuclear program and regional activities.

Iranian officials said peaceful protests are legitimate but claimed foreign powers like the U.S. and Israel are encouraging unrest. Senior Iranian figures warned that any U.S. intervention would lead to regional chaos and retaliation against U.S. interests and forces in the Middle East.

The U.S. and Israel had earlier expressed support for the protesters. Tensions increased following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the U.S. and Trump’s comments about Iran possibly rebuilding its nuclear program after U.S. strikes in June.

This was the first time Donald Trump publicly suggested possible U.S. action specifically to protect Iranian protesters.
