Bangladesh: The shooting came days after the killing of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi.

Days after the killing of prominent Bangladeshi youth leader Sharif Osman Bin Hadi sparked widespread unrest, another youth leader was shot on Monday, deepening political tensions in the country.

The injured leader has been identified as Muhammad Motaleb Sikdar, the Khulna divisional chief of the Bangladesh National Citizen Party (NCP), according to The Daily Star. He was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition following the attack.

Who Is Motaleb Sikdar?

Muhammad Motaleb Sikdar, 42, is a resident of Sheikhpara Palli in Sonadanga. He serves as the Khulna divisional chief of the NCP and is also a central organizer of the party’s workers’ wing, NCP Sramik Shakti.

Confirming the incident, NCP joint principal coordinator Mahmuda Mitu posted on Facebook that “Muhammad Motaleb Sikdar was shot a few minutes ago.”

Sonadanga Model Police Station officer-in-charge Animesh Mondol said miscreants opened fire at Sikdar around 11:45 am near Gazi Medical College Hospital, targeting his head. Doctors later told police that Sikdar is out of danger. The bullet reportedly entered near one ear, pierced the skin, and exited from the other side.

Bangladeshi media reports said the shooting happened while Sikdar was preparing for a rally scheduled to begin shortly. Saif Nawaz, an NCP leader from the party’s Khulna metropolitan unit, confirmed this detail.

Bangladesh Tensions Rise

The shooting comes amid heightened political unrest following the death of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, a key youth leader of Bangladesh’s 2024 uprising. Hadi, 32, was a senior figure in the student-led platform Inqilab Mancha and a strong critic of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Hadi was shot by masked attackers on December 12 while leaving a mosque in central Dhaka. He was later airlifted to Singapore for advanced treatment but died from his injuries last Thursday, officials said.

Following his death, Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus called it an “irreparable loss for the nation,” announced a day of mourning, and ordered special prayers across the country.

Hadi’s killing triggered strong political reactions, with thousands of protesters flooding the streets of Dhaka late Thursday and early Friday, demanding justice for the slain youth leader.
