Australia vs England: On the opening day of the fifth Ashes Australia vs England Test at Sydney Cricket Ground, England reached 211 for 3 at tea. Joe Root was unbeaten on 72 and Harry Brook on 78 not out, sharing a 154-run partnership, adding 97 runs in the second session.

Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bat. Early wickets fell to Mitchell Starc (Ben Duckett, 27) and Michael Neser (Zak Crawley, 16), with Jacob Bethell out for 10 off Scott Boland.

England did not pick a specialist spinner, including seamer Matthew Potts for the injured Gus Atkinson. Australia’s Beau Webster played his first match of the series, replacing Jhye Richardson. Todd Murphy was the 12th man.

Australia leads the series 3-1 and has already retained the Ashes urn.
