The Big Bash League’s story began in 2011, and its very first final already set the tone for the rivalry and excitement the tournament is known for today. Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers went head-to-head in that inaugural final, with the Sixers coming out on top by 7 wickets. Moises Henriques stole the show that night, smashing 70 runs off just 41 balls and earning the very first Man of the Match award in BBL history.

When fans talk about unforgettable BBL finals, the BBL 04 (2014–15) final almost always comes up. Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers created pure drama in that match. With just 8 runs needed in the final over and six wickets still in hand, the Sixers looked completely in control. But Yasir Arafat delivered one of the best pressure overs the league has ever seen, giving away only 6 runs. On the last ball, the Sixers needed two to win—but they couldn’t get them. The Scorchers won by the smallest of margins in one of the most intense, heart-stopping finishes the BBL has ever seen.

If there’s one team that has truly defined success in the BBL, it’s the Perth Scorchers. They’ve lifted the trophy five times, more than any other team. Their first title came in BBL 03 (2014) against the Hobart Hurricanes, and their latest win was in BBL 12 (2023) after beating the Brisbane Heat. Over the years, they’ve built a reputation for being consistent, fearless, and incredibly tough in big moments.

The most recent BBL final, played on January 27, 2025, gave fans another match to remember. The Hobart Hurricanes faced the Sydney Thunder at Bellerive Oval, and the Thunder posted a competitive 182 in their 20 overs. But then came one of the standout performances in BBL finals history. Local 23-year-old Mitchell Owen lit up the stadium with a sensational 108 off 42 balls, smashing the Thunder’s bowling attack all around the ground with a strike rate of 257.14. Even after he got out, Matthew Wade and Ben McDermott calmly finished the chase in just 14.1 overs, giving the Hurricanes their first-ever BBL title in front of their home crowd.
