The World Test Championship points table has taken an interesting turn once again, and this time, it is bad news for the Indian team and their fans.
After New Zealand’s dominant nine-wicket win over the West Indies in the second Test at Wellington, Team India has dropped to sixth place in the World Test Championship points table.
Before this, even after the disappointing 2-0 home whitewash against South Africa, Team India were sitting in the fifth position, and New Zealand were just behind them in the sixth position.
But on Friday, December 12, New Zealand’s victory over the West Indies changed the World Test Championship points table. New Zealand picked up a crucial victory at the Basin Reserve, pushing themselves all the way up to third place in the WTC standings.
Talking about the points percentage, Team New Zealand is at 66.67% points percentage, while India sits at 48.15%, putting them below Sri Lanka and Pakistan as well. If England wins the third Ashes test match against Australia, Team India will fall even further down, possibly to seventh place.
On the other hand, for New Zealand, this win was crucial and was a major boost in their pursuit of the World Test Championship. During the match, Jacob Duffy’s brilliant five-wicket haul on the third day helped bowl out West Indies for just 128, and Devon Conway and Kane Williamson finished by successfully chasing the required 56 runs.
Now with this win, New Zealand has grabbed 12 important points and is now once again in the running to be one of the top contenders for the World Test Championship Final. India’s next WTC challenge will come in January 2026, when they will host a test series against New Zealand.
