Timothée Chalamet got a big boost in his Oscar race after winning Best Actor at the Critics Choice Awards on January 4, 2026. He won for his role in the film Marty Supreme. This was the first major award show of the 2026 Hollywood awards season.
Chalamet beat Leonardo DiCaprio for the award. DiCaprio’s film One Battle After Another won Best Picture. Paul Thomas Anderson won Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for the same film.
In Marty Supreme, Chalamet plays a table tennis champion from the 1950s who is driven by big dreams. The film is loosely based on the life of real table tennis player Marty Reisman. The movie was directed by Josh Safdie and became a surprise hit around the world. Chalamet trained hard in table tennis for the role.
During his speech, Chalamet thanked Josh Safdie and said the film showed a flawed man with a simple dream without telling people what to think.
Chalamet is 30 years old and is already a two-time Oscar nominee. He recently played Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. After this win, he is now seen as a top contender for the Oscars, which will be held on March 15.
