Australia opener Usman Khawaja has announced his retirement from international cricket, confirming that the fifth Ashes Test against England at the Sydney Cricket Ground will be his final match. The 39-year-old made the announcement at a press conference alongside his family.
Khawaja debuted in Test cricket in 2011 and the Sydney Test will be his 88th appearance in the format. He was part of Australia’s World Test Championship-winning team in 2023 and was named Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year the same year.
“I want to share that I will be stepping away from international cricket after the SCG Test match. Through cricket, God has given me more than I ever expected – lifelong memories, friendships that extend beyond the sport, and lessons that shaped who I am away from the field. But no career is built alone. I had immense support along the way. I thank my parents for the sacrifices they made, even though they were never seen in the spotlight,” Khawaja said on Friday.
